LIVE DEMO OF A RARE SURGICAL PROCEDURE

Dr Neelakandan
Professor & Head, Dept of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery,
Meenakshi Ammal Dental College & Hospital
Chennai.

For the first time in the history of dental education in Andhra Pradesh, there was live demonstration of a surgical procedure to the students at Vishnu Dental College. A rare case of Pindborg Tumour was operated by Dr R. S. Neelakandan, Professor of Oral Surgery, Meenakshi Ammal Dental College, Chennai, and a team of Oral Surgeons, headed by Dr Padmarayalu, Vishnu Dental College, Bhimavaram. The patient had a huge tumour of the lower jaw extending from one side of the jaw to the other. A part of the jaw had to be removed as it had been destroyed. A novel procedure of bone regeneration using ‘TRANSPORT OSTEOGENESIS”, a process by which new bone is formed in place of a resected area of the jaw bone, was performed. The surgery went on for nearly 5 hrs and a live demonstration of the proceedings was shown on screen to the 125 students and staff of Vishnu Dental College. The video display was made possible by use of an LCD projector and high resolution video camera. The surgeons could interact with students through a 2-way audio system and clarify their doubts, meticulously explain the procedure and describe subtle nuances of reconstructive surgery.
