Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology

                              Oral medicine is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the health and disease involving the oral and para oral structures. It includes the investigations, diagnosis and medical management of diseases specific to the orofacial tissues and of oral manifestations of systemic diseases. It expands all the above explained in view of updating and research.

                       Radiology of head and neck is included in this speciality and it is the study of radiation, its uses in imaging of head and neck and interpretation of which aids in the perfect diagnosis.

The department of Oral Medicine and Radiology functions in three sections:-

       ORAL DIAGNOSIS: Receiving all patients, examining the mouth and doing the necessary investigations for diagnosing the diseases, charting out in the prescribed case sheet, prescribing medical management and following the referral system.

      ORAL MEDICINE:  All non-surgical cases are treated with various medical therapeutics. Proper diagnosis and proper treatment are carried out for medically compromised patients. Giving opinion to the referral cases for local and systemic diseases. 

       ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL RADIOLOGY: Taking various intraoral, extra oral radiographs, orthopantomogram, cephalometric radiographs for various patients and giving interpretation this aiding in diagnosis.

                          Students are exposed to wide range of patients with dental and maxillofacial problems and all students get extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and medical management of the same.

                       The aim of the department is 'Oral health for General health'. The Department will instil the following objectives in every student:

1.      Ability to identify normal mucosa from the abnormal mucosa.

2.      Oral manifestations of various systemic diseases.

3.      Adequate knowledge about common laboratory investigations and interpretation of their results.

4.     Adequate knowledge about medical complications that can arise while treating systemically compromised patients and to take prior precautions/consents from the concerned medical specialists.

5.      Ability to take intra oral radiographs, interpret and arrive at radiographic diagnosis.

6.      Adequate knowledge about various radiographic health hazards, radiation safety and protection.
