Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics


Orthodontics is the branch of Science and the art of dentistry which deals with the development and anomalies of the teeth and the jaws that affect oral health and esthetic and mental well being of the person. It deals with the alignment of the teeth.

The Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics at Vishnu Dental Collage, Vishnupur, Bhimavaram was started in the year 2001 offers a undergraduate BDS and three-year post-graduate MDS program which was started in 2008, the degreesare awarded by the NTR health university, Vijayawada, Andra Pradesh, India. The undergraduate and post graduate training program in Orthodontics is accredited by the Dental Council of India.

The postgraduates, the teaching staff and all ancillary personnel work together within the ethos of a team. The course as a whole, including its content and its teaching staff, are appraised frequently enabling a constantly evolving process to ensure it meets the highest quality standards and is appropriate for modern orthodontics. It offers a first class, all round educational experience with a blend of both young and experienced, enthusiastic teachers in the clinical, academic and research fields. The treatment of, and research into, malaligned or misplaced teeth and abnormalities of the jaws, with special expertise in caring for those suffering from facial deformity, cleft palate and other malformations

The vision of our Department is to make a universal impact by leading care providers from the "experienced based" art of orthodontics to the research tested knowledge base necessary to achieve quality treatment for individual patients.

Goals of the department

- To establish Quality studies of materials properties of orthodontic materials, analysis of patient records to address questions of clinical efficacy and outcomes, and patient self-perception and its influence on quality of life.
- Clinical simulations that integrate the areas of Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
- To broadly cover research activities in such areas as orthodontic appliance design and biomechanics, imaging technology, tissue engineering, psychosocial aspects of care delivery, as well as, being focused on fundamental basic science research and discovery.

To provide experience in biomedical sciences, scientific methodology and research techniques and to develop an appreciation for the biological and scientific aspects of orthodontics.
