Department of Periodontics & Implantology

Periodontology or Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, diseases, and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament.

Periodontology has been the leader among the dental specialities in embracing the concepts of evidence based decision making. (EBM)

Periodontology is rooted in the medical sciences and in the greater picture, is related to biology and technology. With the semial discovery of various aspects in this feild during 19th and 20th centuries lead to the development of medical model of periodontal treatment.

The word 'periodontal' comes from the Greek for 'around the teeth.' Specialists in the field of periodontics are interested in conditions which involve the underlying support structures for the teeth, including the alveolar bone and the gums. Periodontal disease and congenital malformations can lead to the loss of teeth in addition to extreme discomfort for the patient, and periodontal disease has also been linked with cardiovascular disease. The connection between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease is a cause for concern in many communities where people neglect their teeth due to the inability to afford dental care or out of fear of the dentist. Periodontal medicine implies that the speciality has advanced by pursuit of the medical management of the disease, by continuing to explore how the periodontal diseases contribute to systemic conditions. It is exciting to envision what the future may hold for the development of this track of Periodontology.

The postgraduates, the teaching staff and all ancillary personnel work together within the ethos of a team. The course as a whole, including its content and its teaching staff, are appraised frequently enabling a constantly evolving process to ensure it meets the highest quality standards and is appropriate for modern periodontics with various recent diagnostic aids and treatment modalities. It offers a first class, all round educational experience with a blend of both young and experienced, enthusiastic teachers in the clinical, academic and research fields. The treatment of, and research into, periodontal regeneration, perioesthetics, and treatments concerned in conjunction to endodontics, prosthodontics, and orthodontics branches of dentistry.

The vision of our Department is to make a universal impact by leading care providers from the "experienced based" treatment modalities of periodontics to the research tested knowledge base necessary to achieve quality treatment for individual patients.

Goals of the department
-To inculcate the ability to find, discriminate, evaluate and use information at a professional level.
-We strive to minimize the delay between advances in research findings in clinical medicine and dentistry and their incorporation into daily practice.
-To establish Quality studies, analysis of patient records to address questions of clinical efficacy and outcomes, and patient self-perception and its influence on quality of life.
-New therapeutic goals and clinical techniques, based on an improved understanding of the disease.
-To broadly cover research activities in periodontics.

Mission
-To provide experience in biomedical sciences, scientific methodology and research techniques and to develop an appreciation for the biological and scientific aspects of Periodontics.
-To provide quality periodontal care to a diverse community of patients and also encourages analytical and critical thinking, and communicate subject knowledge globally.
